Vitiligo
A chronic skin disorder that causes depigmentation of patches of skin is called vitiligo. When the cells responsible for skin pigmentation can not function any longer, vitiligo occurs. Although the cause of vitiligo is still unknown some research implies that it may also arise from genetic, oxidative tress, neutral or viral causes. Non-segmental vitiligo is the most common form and it usually occurs between ages of 10 and 30 years showing sign of loss of eye color, loss of skin color inside the mouth and graying or whitening of hair.
The most distinct symptom of vitiligo is the depigmentation of patches of skin on the extremities. At first it is only a small patch but later on it can enlarge and change shape and it visibly occurs on the face, wrists and hand. Depigmentation is manifested around body orifices such as nostrils, genitalia, umbilicus, mouth and eyes. People affected by vitiligo may experience mood disorders and depression.
